Although I was prompted to go to the UK by the 63rd World Science Fiction Convention, it takes very little to motivate me to make the trip. Time and money are my biggest obstacles. Since I was investing . . . more

About Me
-
Describe Yourself:Writing has been my favorite creative pastime since I was teenager. I have participated in writers' workshops on and off since 1983, spending most of that time with Mark Kreighbaum and my mentor, James N. Frey, who also coached Tess Collins and Paul Clayton and has never appeared on Oprah (that was another guy). In addition, I have coordinated the writers' workshops for nine genre conventions, including six World Science Fiction Conventions (aka Worldcons). Some of the professional participants for past workshops have included S. M. Stirling, Barry Longyear, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and David Brin. I am currently marketing my first novel, a gothic mystery, and working on my second, an Elizabethan fantasy.
Aside from crafting fiction, my other great interests include ghost folklore and history, particularly British. I love good movies and my all-time favorite TV show is THE AVENGERS. EASTENDERS is my favorite current show and I'm really upset that BBC America has discontinued broadcasting it. Many of the cable programs also intrigue me. At present, I make my living in technical publications.
My pet peeves include people who park sloppy and seeing the word reference used as a verb. I have two cats. I like my onions cooked and celery raw.

On Gather, I'm Looking For ...:Despite my background, I'm still lousy at copyediting my own work. No matter how much try, I usually find grammatical problems or poor word choices in my articles after they've been posted. One of the Gather features that I appreciate is the ability to make minor edits. (I do believe in copyeditors, but can't expect anyone to do it for no compensation.) Since I don't catch all of my errors, I thank you for bearing with me.
As for any postings of ghost stuff, I would like to point out that I try to make the reviews I post as accurate as possible, but sometimes the facts are hard to find and may come up later. The best ghost stories do have historical backgrounds, but unless they are thoroughly researched, are considered folklore. History is based on facts, while folklore is based on hearsay. Sometimes hearsay makes a good starting point in research, which eventually either confirms or disputes the stories.
When I offer criticism to help improve a writer's work, I generally do not simply direct them to read someone's "how-to" essay or book. Through experience, I have learned that discussing the theory of writing with novices does not really help them improve their work. (We never think these mistakes apply to us.) Theorists can spout their ideas all they want, but people wanting to improve their work are frequently unable to understand what the theorist is saying until the problem is pointed out in their own work. Therefore, when I comment on the writing of a posting, I am much more likely to tell writers what prompted me to rate the way I did. Reading lots of highly rated articles is valuable advice, but that in itself is far from enough.
Since most of the writing I post online are reviews, you can find a bigger body of my work at Epinions, where they actually pay out a little money without the big rigamorale of the point system.

Jean, just the teensiest bit odd, F., Feb 14, 2009, 3:34PM ESTAdrienne,
I just wanted to let you know that I have added "NorCal Ghost Stories" to the list of "Group Links" on the homepage of my group "Northern California Enthusiasts". If you'd like to reciprocate, our URL is redwoodempire.gather.com.
Also, I was noticing you don't have a "banner" for NorCal Ghost. If you'd like, I could mock-up a couple of different ones, post them on my Photobucket account and send you the URLs to take a look at. I could also do a "background" image to "tile", if you wish.
You could take a look at NorCal Enthusiasts (URL above) and my other group ".Make.A.Post.A.Mandala." (URL: makepostamandala. gather.com) to get an idea of the kinds of graphics things I do.
Let me know, k?
Kindest regards,
jean f. -

Thank you for being a member of Fweeky Cweepies~
When you go to bed tonight.
Do not forget to pull the covers up tight.
Tuck the sheets around your feet.
Leave not a single toe in sight.
If the wind begins to blow and howl.
And things begin to dance in the shadows.
Close your eyes tight-
It's just the start of a late night fright.
When you wake in the safety of mornings light.
Come share a tale of your plight. -
